Socks by De Heem (Flowers) | Painted

This pair of socks is inspired by a flower still life painted in the 17^th century by Jan Davidsz. De Heem, a world famous representant from this typical Dutch genre to this day.

What we do not always realize enough is that the flower bouquet in those days did not exist in real. If you are an expert you would immediatey spot that depicted flowers would not bloom at the same time, let alone that they were available at all. In the 17th century flowers were scarce and very expensive and bouquets only appeared in monastic and royal life here and there. Thus, to decorate your house, it made much more sense to order a painting instead of longing for the real thing!
