Socks by d'Hondecoeter (Peacock) | Painted

This pair of socks is inspired by a lively 17th century scene of exotic and common fowl, paddling happily about - they could take off for a flight at any moment!

Dutch painter Melchior d’Hondecoeter was the undisputed expert of these scenes. Not only Dutch royalty, but also Willem and Mary - the King and Queen of England - commissioned his paintings. These were huge canvasses of at least 1.5 meters in width, meant to heng over a mantelpiece in a large country house.

Professionally, d’Hondecoeter may have been a celebrated man and a guiding light to his fellow painters in his private life. However, he actually was less fortunate than he seemed. He often drank away the sadness of his unhappy marriage in a pub near his home.
